Military mamas out there, something has been bothering me for weeks that I just need to get off my chest. I am a female veteran and it seems many don’t recognize women serve in our military. Some days I want to scream it from the rooftops. Because you know what, I’ve realized many people in America don’t acknowledge the thousands of women serving in our militaries.
Have you ever been out with your family when someone stops to thank your husband for their service? Or when you are on the phone with Direct TV and the person on the other end recognizing you are a Military Family tells you they are appreciative of your husband and his service to the country? Um, hello??
Often times, my husband has to say well both my wife and I are in the Army.
Why is it always assumed the husband is in the military?
With the advances the Military, specifically the Army has made with regards to where women can serve, I am confused. Why is it so farfetched that women can be combat veterans and be meritoriously awarded? Why is it that when I tell someone we are military they automatically assume it is my husband who is in the military?
Yes, there are women serving in the military
There are over 214,000 women serving on active duty. Approximately 14% of the military is women. You might be thinking that’s a small percentage. But now women are found in some of the toughest branches of the military serving in the ranks of private to 4 star General. The time for people to recognize women are present in our militaries and making an impact is here! So next time you see valorous license plates or talk to a military family, have the respect to not assume the husband is the veteran.
